Hubert Kowalczyk

Polish bass is a graduate from the Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin, where he studied with Prof. Martin Bruns and Prof. Dr. Michail Lanskoi.

Whilst still a student, Hubert joined the International Opera Studio at Staatsoper Hamburg, taking on roles such as Alcindoro (La Bohème), Pistola (Falstaff), Montano (Otello) under Daniele Callegari, and Dottore Grenvil (La Traviata). Since 2021 he is a member of the main ensemble at Hamburg State Opera, where he appeared as Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Colline (La Bohème), Crespel (Les contes d’Hoffmann) conducted by Kent Nagano, and Oroveso (Norma). Highlights for this season include three role debuts as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Ferrando (Il trovatore), and Sparafucile (Rigoletto), as well his house and Wagnerian debut as Fasolt (Das Rheingold) in Theater Basel.

His past engagements include house and role debuts as Zuniga at Staatsoper Berlin under Bertrand de Billy, as Nourabad in Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles at Opernhaus Zürich, and as Collatinus in a concert performance of Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin conducted by Robin Ticciati, as well a role and house debut at the Bregenzer Festspiele as Haly in Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri.

Hubert is a former member of the Opera Academy at Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw, where he was under artistic mentorship of Eytan Pessen and Olga Pasichnyk.
